FOR those who think the Toyota 86 is underpowered, US drifter Ryan Tuerck has your answer. He plans to install a Ferrari 458’s 4.5-litre V8 under the bonnet of the little Japanese coupe.

The F136 engine is also in the frontengined Maserati GranTurismo but the go-much-faster 86’s was nicked from the mid-engined previous-gen Fazz. Tuerck is currently posting progress photos to social media and, if successful, the transplant would be a sizeable step from the regular Toyota’s 147kW/205Nm FA20 2.0-litre flat-four to 419kW/540Nm (or 445kW at 9000rpm if whipped from a lastof- the-line 458 Speciale). We’re not sure what it would do to the compact coupe’s chassis balance, but we could probably take a stab at what would happen to the Prius-derived Michelin Primacy tyres after a dab of throttle.
