Performance treasure hunt
EARLIER THIS issue we celebrated the manual gearbox, and long may it live. But at the same time it was a reminder of the many cars that have already made the transition to auto-only – including, as you will know, Porsche’s 911 GT3.
It was especially difficult accepting this car’s switch from manual-only 997 to PDK-only 991 when the GT3 owed much of its legend to the fact you had to change gears yourself. In turn, prices of the old manual GT3s have skyrocketed.
There’s word the new sixspeed manual in the 911 R could make a return to GT3 for 991.2. And so it could be worth waiting until then to see if prices of the still-epic 997 GT3 – 305kW/405Nm from a screaming 3.6-litre nat-atmo flat-six – are in a manualinflated bubble. Currently, all are about $230K – and even if our bubble theory itself pops, our 2007 Performance Car of the Year is still a mighty tempting alternative to a new base Carrera.
Price defi nitely right
A DECADE ago the MY07 ‘eagle-eye’ Subaru WRX STI cost the equivalent of $70K in today’s money. Yet in 2016, having been (hopefully) loved by a previous owner, its 206kW/392Nm 2.5-litre turbo boxer-four and rallybred all-wheel drive system with Driver Controlled Centre Differential could be all yours... for around $25K.
It won’t drive enormously differently to the brand new model either, the STI following a more evolutionary than revolutionary development path the last 10 years.
At $22K with 200,000km the one we found in Sydney is at the lower end of the price range. The upper end is more like $30K – we found one at this price with just 15,600km.
