New 430kW G63 AMG

G-Wagen finally scores an update after 40 years

FOR THE first time in almost 40 years, there’s a new Mercedes G-Class. While the original Gelandewagen underwent significant overhauls during its 39-year lifespan, its platform was essentially the same as that which debuted in 1979. Despite continuing strong sales, regulatory pressures meant its time was up, but Mercedes hasn’t strayed too far from the formula with the new version, to the extent that you’ll need a keen eye to spot new from old. Topping the range for now is the G63, which switches to a 430kW/850Nm version of AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Combined with a new nine-speed auto, this is sufficient to shift its 2485kg bulk to 100km/h in 4.5sec. The new platform liberates more interior space, particularly rear legroom, while also allowing the use of the latest electronic architecture, including the full suite of active safety systems and a much classier interior. The new Mercedes-AMG G63 will appear on Aussie roads later in 2018 for around $250,000
