“MY SUBLIME green ’70 Charger runs a 440 with an Elgin cam topped by a Holley 750 double-pumper. Hooker headers take care of the waste gases, and wheels are 18x8 on the front and 20x10 rear. The ’67 Phoenix used to have a 318 but now runs a 383 with 30thou-over pistons and a Mutha Thumpr cam, with a 670 Holley on top. Trans is a 727 Torqueflite, and it’s had a four-wheel disc-brake conversion.” Photos: Greg Forster
“MY 1983 VH SL was originally my dad’s race car, but he felt the time had come to sell it, so I decided to take it off his hands. It had a 202 in it, but now runs a mildly worked 253 out of an HQ. I’ve added a High Energy sump, stage 3 Crow cam kit, Edelbrock manifold, 600cfm vac-sec Holley, Pacemaker extractors with a 2¼-inch system, three-core aluminium radiator and forged conrods. It is a factory manual, but it blew up a few Aussie four-speeds, so my dad put a reconditioned XF Falcon four-speed in it. The paint and interior is still all original and is in great condition. It sits on 20-inch MC Racing wheels and the suspension has been upgraded and set up for racing, so it handles like it’s on rails, even with the 20s.”
“MY CENTURA has a solid-cam engine running on avgas, and there’s a NOS system onboard too for when I need an extra jolt. Trans is a T350 with 4000rpm stall, running to a fourpinion LSD with 3.89:1 gears. Strengthened, adjustable suspension smooths over any bumps. Inside there’s custom VE HSV GTS seats, and all the fruit.”
“HERE’S my HQ Premier sedan. I got it three years ago for my 13th birthday. I’d always wanted an HQ Prem but with prices creeping up and having seen a lot of shells that looked like they were just pulled out of creeks, I was beginning to think I’d have to settle for a standard HQ sedan and swap the front end over. But then one day I came home from school and there she was! After long talks with the owner – who had plans to molest it by turning it into a tube-chassis drag car – I picked her up. I plan to give her a complete ground-up rebuild, including an LS1 conversion backed by a TH400, and eventually I’ll replace the 10-bolt with a nine-inch. My mum recently realised a 25-year dream of owning an LX Torana sedan. She’s a bit more old-school than me, so her plans are for a tough 253/Aussie four-speed combo!”
“THIS is my XY ute. I would love to have taken it down to Red Centre Nats, but work commitments meant I was stuck here in Tennant Creek, 450km away. My grandfather bought the car brand new and left it to me when he passed away. Since then I’ve had it tidied up a bit, thanks to Pete Hondow of Custom Automotive in Alice Springs.
The duco has been touched up and the engine is now a 393ci Cleveland. I’m just the present-day custodian of it; it looks like the kids have already claimed it!”
“THIS is my VG, running a standardstroke 318 with 10:1 KB pistons, 360 heads, 750DP and a 292 cam. Trans is a fully manualised reverse-pattern 904 auto, running to a 3.9:1 HiLux diff. She rolls on 14x6 and14x8 Weld Pro Stars.
I built the car myself, and so far it’s run 11.8@120mph.”
“WITH a custom fibreglass bonnet, LED lights in the cab, and lowered springs combined with 18-inch MNM Zinger rims, my VX definitely turns heads.
A four-channel Fusion amp and 12-inch Monaro headlights and tail-lights, blue sub in the boot with a double-DIN Alpine head unit makes for sweet-sounding music. Under the hood I have a cold-air intake system and a full extractor twin system for a nice growl. It’s definitely a great first car!”
