ONE of the most coveted trophies come presentation time is the Spirit of Drag Challenge award. It goes to the competitor who best embodies what the event is all about; someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to help their fellow racers in times of need, often to their own detriment. This year it went to Gawler Mechanical’s Brett Mathew.
Not only did Brett spend the weeks leading up to Drag Challenge thrashing to get his mate Graeme Horner’s turbo LS1 VK Calais ready to roll, but during the event he never once passed up the opportunity to lend a hand to whoever happened to need it.
The fact that he was the first confirmed entrant for this year’s Drag Challenge shows his enthusiasm for the event. “I love Drag Week in America and always wanted to do it, so when this came up I was just like: ‘Yeah, we’re doing it!’” he says.
Brett’s HT Prem started life as a humble six-pot, but now sports a Brodix-headed 400ci Chev, Powerglide and nine-inch rear.
It runs consistent mid-10s and comfortably made the return journey from Adelaide to Melbourne for Drag Challenge under its own steam – no mean feat!
