JON’S Challenger ran a healthy 10.97sec pass at Calder on day one, but he felt it should be capable of more.
After tracing the problem to an accelerator cable issue that was preventing the 512ci Wedge motor from achieving full throttle, Jon got it sorted and was poised to unleash the car’s full potential at Mildura on day three. It turned out the tailshaft wasn’t up to the task though, and parts for American muscle cars aren’t exactly easy to track down in the Oz outback.
“Everyone at the track was helping, driving us from house to house trying to find the parts we needed to fix it,” Jon says. “We even ended up at Darren Morgan’s Top Fuel workshop, and he went through containers and his workshop looking for parts; he was willing to do whatever it took to get us going.
In the morning we ended up finding a six-cylinder front uni to get us out of trouble, so we cut and shut it to make a new tailshaft, but just missed out on making a pass on day four.”
He did make it back to Calder though, and was pleased to reel off another 10-second pass to round out the week. All’s well that ends well!
