THE Summernats crew have announced that after making fire suits available to burnout competitors as an option for the past few years, all drivers and passengers will be required to suit up for Street Machine Summernats 31. You can bring your own or use the free suits provided. Suits remain optional at Burnout Masters qualifying events, but will be provided free of charge. And while only weirdos enjoy sweating in a fire suit on a hot summer’s day, it just makes sense, no?

THE Lights Out meeting from South Georgia Motorsports Park is fast becoming a must-do for Aussies travelling to the US. This year’s meeting was a cracker, with Stevie ‘Fast’ Jackson setting a new world record for a radial-tyre car over the eighth-mile – 3.737 seconds at 199mph. Jackson made it through to the quarter-finals in the ‘Radial vs the World’ class, but spun in the deep end after winning the race, with Joe ‘Nova’ Albrecht taking out the win in his blown Hemi-powered 2006 GTO, on a 3.837-second pass against Mark Woodruff’s twin-turbo Corvette.

THERE is so much happening next issue, it has our heads spinning. We’ve got massive coverage of Powercruise 66 from Sydney Motorsport Park, Bathurst Autofest, Gazznats WA and the DLRA Speed Week. Our run of amazing street machine survivor cars continues, with a twin-turbo Capri built in the late 80s that is still blowing minds today.

We’ll also look at the next steps for our Project Taxi and much more! The May issue of SM goes on sale 20 April.
