I FIRST met Chad Atkinson down in Albany a few years back. He had a couple of pretty interesting projects on the go to showcase his metalwork and fab skills, all of which have come together in the little sidecar project he did for his boys, Royce and Sydney (5). There’s a full feature in Street Machine Hot Rod #19, out now!

Where did you learn your metalworking skills?

I did mechanics for a bit, then worked in smash repair until got my trade. I did that until the kids came along and then started my own business so I could spend more time with them.

Do you let the boys help out in the shed?

They’re into it a lot, especially the youngest. He’s always asking if he can get on the tools and I just let him go for it – obviously not the lathe and that sort of stuff.

My youngest is always asking if he can get on the tools and I just let him go for it – obviously not the lathe though!

What’s the next thing to come out of the shop?

I want to build another VW Beetle and I’ve got an F-truck on the go, but the more I’ve got into cars the more my tastes have changed.

I really have to thank Grant Graham from G&T Restorations for putting me on the path and pushing me to start my business, Silver custom Aces. He stuff, showed and opened me some my Barris eyes to books things and a lot all more. that old-school custom stuff, and opened my eyes to things a lot more.
