QUICK AND DEADLY

IT WENT 7.000 ON THE LAST PASS AND I WAS REALLY HAPPY, BUT ALSO DISHEARTENED. I KNOW IT’S GOING TO RUN A SIX, AS THE COMBO CAN MAKE A LOT MORE POWER

I BELIEVE Frank Marchese from Dandy Engines can lay claim to the contentious title of Australia’s quickest street car, after the twin-turbo XW Fairmont he owns with Dandy boss Lou Iudica ran 7.000@203mph with a stock chassis and stock rear floorpan on a 275 radial!

When the car was built three years ago, the talk of it running into the sixes seemed insane, but with every meeting this 450ci small-block Ford-powered machine gets better and better.

“We have had the same tune in the car for three years; it’s just been reliability that has let us down,” Frank explained. “But we are very lucky that we have had the support of many businesses and their products to keep us going.

“We have broken five blocks in this car, but World Products has given us a new one to try that seems to be holding up. Nathan Higgins has supplied us with better heads and has a manifold we want to try, and Precision has a new set of 88mm Pro Mods they claim will make 300-400hp more than the Gen 1 turbos we are using now.” Sydney Dragway was the scene of the 7.000, and Frank got a total of nine hits in, the quickest of which was the final pass.

“Unfortunately my trans was broken, so a friend lent me one with similar ratios,” said Frank. “We thought the first hit wouldn’t be far off a 6.99, because we went 7.15 with a pedal a couple of weeks before, but the trans was different in terms of pressures, and my tune-ups went out the window.

“Eventually we went 7.03, but about 1.4 seconds in, the car wanted to wheelspin. We dialled in the suspension around that, but then it wanted to carry the wheels for all of second gear. At 3900lb, it’s crazy to think it’ll do that.

“It went 7.000 on the last pass and I was really happy, but also disheartened. know it’s going to run a six, as the combo can make a lot more power; we know that from Bezzina’s engine. But on the day you only have from 10 ’til 4 o’clock, and there are a lot of things happening. It doesn’t come easy.”

Frank has the car entered for Drag Challenge, and we’d love to see him run his first six at our event. “That would be a dream come true,” he said. “I’ve got my tune-up sorted, and if scared the track to will do it.” hold s the power, I ain’t gunna be scared to do it.”
