Your Motoring Years, page 32, section 06. “Sandown raceway which was being built in 1964.”

It opened 11/03/1962. As I was 16, my Mum drove a mate and I to the meeting.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, Ian. Likewise, Sandown Raceway aka Sandown Racecourse has seen many chapters in its history. The venue had certainly opened and was in use from 1962, but it took a while to build the motor racing circuit and horse racing course, as Trevor McGinley’s photos clearly show. You probably can’t see in the background of the blurry photo of the grandstand but excavation equipment can be seen behind the bare pavilion’s frame. What a fantastic place it is too. Underrated, fast, a great place for spectators. And if Mount Panorama is a bit far away, well, the place is steeped in motorsport history.
