Kombi fetches $158k at Shannons

WE THOUGHT we'd seen it all when a rare 23-window Samba made $202,000 at an auction earlier this year, but we reasoned that the 23-window buses were in short supply. Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic event in November saw the hammer fall on an 11-window Kombi for the princely sum of $158,000.

This two-owner, 1967 ‘Split Window’ Microbus was undoubtedly in very tidy restored condition but pre-auction estimates on this 'no reserve' sale hovered at around $80k. With Beige Grey and Sealing Wax Red two tone paint and a Silver Beige cabin, the Australianmanufactured bus presented well and saw two on-floor buyers get into a merciless duel and that reflected in the final price which was some way over true market valuation for respectable Kombi 'Splitties'.
