STAR of the Detroit motor show was the striking Buick Avista coupe, powered by a 298kW twinturbo 3.0-litre V6 donk mated to a ZF 8-speeder.
Sitting on a 2811mm wheelbase - some 23mm longer than the final VZ Monaro - the Avista looked a natural base for the next version of the Monaro. The Avista’s lines are a clear derivative of the Buick Avenir concept that was styled in Australia by Holden’s design team as the General's big draw at last year’s Detroit show. Don't get your hopes up too high though. The backstage gossip at Cobo Hall suggested they were getting too excited about the Avista, with RHD development largely contingent on projected sales of a Vauxhall variant in a UK market that doesn't traditionally shift large numbers of full-sized coupes.
