I refer to your UC389 issue advice on the LJ Torana I won at the 2/5/16 Shannons Auction. The LJ in fact, after research, is a ‘Prime’ as per the GM ID tag – a limited edition of some 50 XU-1s built in Adelaide in the first half of 1973, as standard all ’72 Bathurst specs fitted. All were painted white to assist the race teams to fit their sponsor’s logos and colours.
This particular LJ was manufactured on 28/4/73 and sold by Ferntree Gully Holden on 6/5/73. The new owner had it painted GM Mustard Yellow. The Dolly Yellow was done by a 1990s owner. On reviewing the thick file, this car was raced in the Manufacturers’ Championship and the ATCC of 1973 and 1974.
During these years it ran triple Webers; it has all the homologation parts including extractors, roller rockers, very high lift cam etc. I believe it was raced by Allan Taylor, and these Prime LJ XU1s were not destined for registration.
I recall reading in late ‘72 or early ‘73 in RCN or Auto Action of these ‘Prime’ fully built LJs in Adelaide so they are rarer than the 200 ‘72 Bathurst Specials.
