WHAT'S MOVING AND SHAKING
The return of the fast Falcon V8 after a seven-year hiatus was cause for celebration then, but history seems to have glossed over the EB S-XR8. For around $8k you can pick up tidy 1991 examples, and these are now eligible for club rego, easing them into a moderate sweet spot for those who missed out first time round.
$118,000 SHANNONS, MELBOURNE There we were a couple of months ago, pontificating on how the Aussie classic car bubble might have popped and then this – $118k for a left-hand drive Escort Mk1. It is the most collectible Ford Escort of all, with the famous Cosworth-developed BDA engine. This model enjoyed a storied competition career, winning rallies such as the East African Safari, RAC and 1000 Lakes, while Zakspeed-prepared cars punched well above their weight in the European Touring Car Championship. Small wonder they make six figure sums.
$35,000 SILVERSTONE, UK With Brexit collapsing the pound by 16 per cent against the Aussie dollar in the past month alone, cars like this Sierra RS Cosworth look genuinely viable import propositions. This one looks cheap because it is cheap, having enjoyed a fate common to many British Cossies, namely being stolen, stripped and recovered. This one subsequently enjoyed a painstaking rebuilt to an exacting original standard in 1989 and was auctioned with less than 6000 miles on the clock. Somebody scalped a great buy here.
Block bargain of the month? It might well have been this supercharged Jag that saw one solitary bid at $7k, the rest of the packed house at Shannons getting a bit nervous at the thought of 247kW of force-fed straight-six, but the Brit Barra works pretty well as long as you avoid the manual 'box. The electrics are another matter altogether.
It pays to remember that this was $175k when new, after which it fell out of bed pricewise, through the floorboards and straight down an abandoned gypsum shaft. $7,000 SHANNONS, MELBOURNE
$20,000 EBAY.COM.AU This is your chance to own a piece of Aussie motoring history. Back in 2011, Arcspeed was going to be our Tesla but, as you now know, that didn’t really happen. We spotted the rolling shell for the prototype on eBay, and it could be fitted with either its original electric powerpack or, if you want to make a bit more noise, a 2.0-litre Honda VTEC lump. Failing that it would make a quite lovely dumpster.
$230,000 MOSSGREEN, MELBOURNE In the last issue, we featured a rough 1972 Series III E-Type coupe that sold for $34,000. Here’s the opposite end of the spectrum, a clean ’72 roadster that saw the hammer fall at an Aussie auction record of $230,000 at Mossgreen’s Melbourne auction. Part of the late John Calvert collection, this car was reputedly Calvert’s favourite weekend car and he had quite a few to choose from.
RM SOTHEBY’S, MONTEREY – 19-20 AUGUST HERE IT IS, arguably the most historically significant American car to ever come up for auction. CSX 2000 is offered for sale by the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust, built and owned from new by the legendary Carroll Shelby and – until now – never leaving his ownership. To call it the holy grail for Shelby fans wouldn’t be too much hyperbole. Sort of. This car was used in testing and development, was driven by the motoring press, and also shown in cities across the United States to drum up interest and sales for the fledgling company, Shelby American, Inc. During this time, thanks to clever marketing, CSX 2000 also convinced the public that Cobra production was in full swing; the car was repainted a different colour for almost every appearance. In reality, CSX2000 remained the first and only Cobra for seven months. A 1962 road test by Road & Track revealed a 0–60 mph sprint in just 4.2 seconds, a standing quarter-mile run in 13.8 seconds at 112 mph, and a top speed of 153 mph - utterly gobsmacking figures for the time.
$189,750 MOSSGREEN, MELBOURNE Another of the Calvert cars, this Aston Martin V8 also realized an Aussie record for this model. This hand built matching numbers AMV8 Series III with a Torqueflite 727 3-speed auto box is presented with its original interior and carpets and includes a rare factory electric sunroof. At the time of Calvert's death it had covered less than 33,000 miles.
$52,000 SHANNONS, MELBOURNE This ‘barn find’ XY clearly required quite a lot of tidying, but nothing that’s beyond the averagely dedicated spannerista.
In fact, it looked a great project car for somebody who wanted a rolling roughie that could be tidied up in instalments. So if you’re on a tighter budget and want in on the ground floor of hot XY ownership, this looked just about perfect.
$126,000 SILVERSTONE, UK Right up until the moment Marco Antonio Barrera turned his face into a soufflé, Naseem Hamed was considered one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world. Here’s his old Impreza 22B, the most collectable Subaru of modern years, with all 400 of the original run selling out in 30 minutes. Showing 2,500 miles, this WRC-plated 22B is a little gem.
No, it’s not a CSL Batmobile, but here’s the next best thing: a road going aluminium wide-bodied lightweight.
