NISSAN GTS-R SKYLINE

A CHILDHOOD DREAM BECOMES A REALITY I imported this car about seven years ago but it stayed in storage for a few years before I started taking it out. Itís in 100 per cent stock condition; in fact the only thing Iíve done is painted it.

They only came in one colour, which is called Bluish Black, you donít need much of an imagination to see why they called it that. When I was a kid Iíd go to the races and watch Mark Skaife and Jim Richards battle it out in these Nissans.

Thatís what made me fall in love with them, especially the GTS-R. I knew from that moment that one day I had to own one, and here we are.

Itís a Group A Homologation car. They made the GTS-R model to race as a touring car and they had to make at least 500 production units to qualify. So as youíd expect, itís got a few goodies over the standard HR31s. Itís got a bigger turbo, a different spoiler, a big front-mount intercooler, bespoke interior bits and a fair few more performance parts over its siblings. I donít have any big plans for the car. I just want to keep it as original as possible given that Nissan

only made 800 of them so theyíre getting pretty rare. Iím quite fussy about the car, but I still take it out a fair bit. I probably take it to around 20 events a year, and go on cruises with the family regularly.

The whole purpose of the car is to drive, so I donít see the point in keeping it garaged all its life.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

I I bought this car as a rolling shell in 1981, I then started the restoration, did the engine swap and all the other modifications and by 1983 it was finished and on the road. The modification list to this car is very extensive, but I tried to keep it looking reasonably stock. Other than the paint, all the work to the car has been done by myself and most of the parts I custom made. The rear of the car is made of two wagon quarter panels, and a wagon tailgate all joined together. As a result the car is quite a bit narrower than is should be, and three inches longer. Itís making about 290HP at the moment, which isnít a lot, but itís only got a small-inch motor, Iíve got a 6.6-litre for it which Iíve been reluctant to put in, but now Iím pretty committed to twin-turboing it and installing it. Thatíll be a big chunk of metal to fit, but Iíve got the room in the engine bay seeing as it has no inner guards. The only real off-the-shelf parts are the doors. The windows in the b-pillar I made myself out of spare parts, if you have a close look most parts of the car have been changed in some way. Itís a good car to drive; itís surprisingly forgiving considering itíll easily do a 13-second quarter with wheelspin. The car has a 38 per cent overdrive so at 100km/h youíre looking at about 1450rpm, so it cruises on the highway nicely.

SUBARU WRX STI LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

Ifirst saw the car at a dealership across the road from the North Melbourne football ground and I fell in love with it. I had a closer look and thought, man Ė I got to take that home. Once I got the car, the first thing I did was give it a big birthday. I cleaned everything and gave it a pretty extensive service Ė replaced the clutch, tyres and fluids and so forth. Once Iíd done that, the car came up a treat. This car is actually one of only 400. It was a direct import to Subaru Docklands which I only recently found out. Iíve tried to keep it reasonably original, the only modification Iíve done to it is added better brakes, but it has a lot of cool upgrades on it from the previous owner like the EcuTeK display on the dash and the manifold-back exhaust system. One day Iíd love to get her making a bit more horsepower, a bigger turbo and supporting mods. Iím in the process of getting some new wheels too, something a bit more stylish and I plan to lower it a little bit. Iíve also designed a period-correct decal for the side. So much for my plan to keep it original. Iím 48 now and my love for cars hasnít changed.

I started with an EH Holden, then later had an LJ Torana and now this. I have no brand allegiance, if itís fast ó I like it.
