ANY reader who thinks that autonomous cars will one day feature on our roads is dreaming.

Why? The very first time one of these things skittles a child, a mother pushing a pram, a cyclist or a pensioner, the media hoo-ha will be so great that nothing will ever remedy the damage this will do to whatever positives these things might bring.

Most importantly, though, seconds after this tragic event every lawyer this side of the black stump will be launching forward to sue the manufacturer of not only the car but also the control system and everybody else even remotely involved with sanctioning this technology, including the responsible government authority.

For better or for worse, that is the world we nowadays live in.
