THE man who brought a German car giant to its knees is, ironically, named John German. Even more ironically, he had actually set out to show Americans how clean diesel engines are. John works for the International Council on Clean Transportation, a small non-profit organisation, and says he never set out to uncover a fraud. But when he road-tested two VWs diesels he was shocked they returned five to 35 times the official figures. He thought the cars must be faulty, but when re-tested on a rolling road they met the official numbers.
