Mazda’s president, Masamichi Kogai, confirmed that the company retains a rotary engine development team and claimed its staff was working “very enthusiastically” towards future vehicular applications. That may not be as the sole powerplant for a production car, however. Mazda has applied for patents utilising a compact rotary engine as a hybrid range extender.
