AUG 2015

The only way is up

HIGHLIGHTS August was another strong month for new car sales, although at 90,705 it was down slightly on July’s record. SUV sales rose (up 19.4% on August last year), with both commercial and conventional passenger car sales flagging.

There’s also another noticable shift emerging – the rise of the luxury marques.

Between them, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have increased their slice of the Australian market from 5.8% in August last year to 7.8%.

LOWLIGHTS Have a look at the top-selling brands in Australia and you’ll notice a change of guard: Holden has fallen below both Mazda and Hyundai to snare only fourth place in August. It’s now third overall in year-to-date sales and sits behind Hyundai. Hurting Holden was the Barina, which suffered a 41% dip to only 311 in a segment where the best-selling Corolla snared 3050 buyers. Renault’s Captur, meanwhile, hit the brakes in the red-hot small SUV class, falling 45% to 150.

HYUNDAI VELOSTER

A mid-cycle refresh, smaller engine and price cuts for Hyundai’s sculpted coupe helped reel 680 buyers into showrooms during August. Happily, though, it’s success barely made a dent in Toyota 86 sales.

TOYOTA HILUX

The Hilux ute is a regular top 10 performer for Toyota.

However, supply hiccups for the cheaper 4x2 version cut sales to just 1956 and allowed both the Ford Ranger (2096) and Mitsubishi Triton (1991) to nudge ahead. a. n nger d.
