THREE years ago I left Sydney for the mining boom in Perth.

We packed up a VE Holden Calais V8, and what a journey it was – one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had.

The Commodore averaged bang on 110km/h and returned 11.8/100km. The car was utterly faultless, comfortable, confidence-inspiring and just good fun. While having a postjourney beer in Fremantle, Dad looked at the car and said: “I cannot imagine a better car for that journey.”

I appreciate that the advent of cheap flights has made trips like this almost obsolete, and a lot of sneering is directed at Australian cars, but I believe we’ll be losing a really good thing when production ceases in 2017.
