WITH an ‘incident’ like Dieselgate we tend to focus on the negatives. But I believe the motoring public, and the world, will actually be better off. Not just because the bastards were outed, but in real terms.

Remember Lance Armstrong? He pushed cycling further and faster, setting a standard for others to rise up to. They were still expected to compete (within the rules), which pushed them to be even better. And it worked.

So, as VW Group released ever better diesel engines that went better than most, it pushed other manufacturers to find ways to compete and produce better, more efficient and, most importantly, cleaner engines.

So cosmic karma has kicked in and humbled VW Group. No big deal, it probably needed to happen. My perception is we have all advanced from this, and that’s a good thing.
