Bet you didn’t see that one coming

HIGHLIGHTS Sales jumped 7.2% in April, with a surprise around every corner. The biggest was Ford toppling Holden in the sales race for the first time since 1999 (see below for one reason why). Hyundai claimed second place ahead of Mazda in the battle of the brands, and Mercedes-Benz pegged ninth. Volkswagen wasn’t clouded by Dieselgate, jumping two places on the bestsellers’ chart. The many small wins on the sales chart were hard-fought, with April’s best gains in commercial vehicles.

LOWLIGHTS Honda was left licking its wounds after sales sank 17.7% for the month, finishing well outside its usual spot in the top 10. Holden, meanwhile, went backwards with every single model, aside from a strong performance by the new Spark (224 sales), to fall 5.1%. Aussie-made sales had their worst month on record, falling to 6150, down 16.7 percent year-to-date. And have electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 gone flat? Sales are down almost 70% in the segment.

FORD MUSTANG

Giddy up! The ’Stang’s arrival bucked Ford to new heights, with 690 deliveries for the month. Tradie favourite, the Ranger ute (3188 sales), was the only other Ford-badged product to outperform it.

TOYOTA COROLLA

We’re used to seeing the Corolla scrapping for top spot on the sales chart, so losing its front-runner status by more than 1000 units is surprising. Toyota offered no explanation. s
