Suzuki Baleno

The Toyota Corolla-fighting Suzuki Baleno is the first model built on the carmakerís all-new stiffer, lighter small car platform.

Made in India, engine choices are either an 82kW/170Nm 1.0-litre turbocharged threepot (in the interests of packaging, the turbo housing is attached directly to the cylinder head), or a 68kW/130Nm fuel-injected 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine.

Hyundai Elantra SR

Hyundai plans to launch an N-badged performance offshoot next year in Europe.

To bridge the gap, Australia will get a teaser of the i30 Nís ambitions via a turbocharged version of the Elantra. The Elantra SR will use the same 150kW/265Nm 1.6-litre engine as the Veloster Turbo, sending drive to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. If all that underbonnet heat gets too much, switch off the sports mode for more mild road manners.
