Audi has added a three-cylinder engine to its entry-level A3 hatch.

The 1.0-litre turbo makes 85kW and 200Nm Ė identical torque but 7kW less than the 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo it replaces.

A 110kW 1.4 and 140kW 2.0 flesh out the rest of the A3 range, including the sedan and Cabriolet line-ups (which donít get the three-cylinder option) while the S3 now has 213kW.

All 2.0-litre models also get a new seven-speed wet twinclutch transmission, which should prove more robust longterm than the dry-clutch systems typically employed for lowertorque engines.

More features are also part of the deal, which kicks off at $35,900 for hatch or Sportback. th h 2
