Airbag recall numbers explode

The number of Australian cars hit by the growing Takata airbag recall has reached almost 2 million.

The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development confirmed to Wheels that as of mid- January, the number of local models affected by the faulty airbags numbered 1,989,104. So far, the recall has scooped up around 100 million vehicles globally: the recalled airbags can either split when they fire, or shoot plastic shrapnel at the people they are supposed to protect. Brands affected here include BMW, Ferrari, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.
