“It was its time. A car that probably made the least money for Porsche out of anything it ever did, because it was so overdeveloped; apparently the margins were horrendous,” says Webber. “Jackie Stewart had a bit to do with it and told me lots of stories of its development with Helmuth Bott, one of the great Porsche engineers.”
“Can pick a race car?” he asks. Of course Webber was going to nominate a race car. Thing is, it’ not the car you might have thought. If you’ guessed a Porsche LMP1 weapon or one of his own winning F1 cars, you’ have been way off beam. “I’ have Jimmy Clark’ car,” he says, still full of wonder for its focus. “Beautiful; sensational.”
Now he’ struggling. “It’ brutal to pick one more car. The current GT3 RS is amazing; the 918 is amazing. I’ ve always loved the Ferrari F40; the Dino, a cute little car. Then there’ the functional stuff like a Toyota LandCruiser. Okay. Single Squirrel chopper. I can get my groceries in that, with a sling line on the bottom. Just fill it up,” he laughs.
